The
EEXCEL Tutorial System provides a one-to-one student-tutor relationship
in the students home via the Internet on powerful specially designed
computers provided by EEXCEL linked together by our high speed cable
based network. Students and Tutors can see, hear and talk to each
other on a real time basis while simultaneously viewing the Student's
homework assignment on their respective monitors. We are able to
do this because each EEXCEL Communities home is equipped with all
the computer cables, Internet connections and powerful computers
needed to make the tutorial system interactive and simple to use.
We begin
the tutorial program with an assessment of each student to determine
scholastic ability and proficiency along with areas of interest
such as sports, hobbies, music etc.. The student is then matched
with a tutor who shares some common interest with the student. The
result of the assessments are then used to develop an individual
study program designed to first bring the student up to proficiency
levels expected for his or her grade level. This process is critically
important to a students ability to be an effective learner.
We have
found that students who simply try to learn the current course work
without having learned the fundamentals for the current class work
do not retain the information as well since gaps exist in their
understanding. A student must first learn the underlying fundamentals
which create the frame work of the material being studied. The frame
work provides the logical relationship upon which all other information
is attached. If a student is missing part of the frame work, he
will not have the ability to properly relate it to the rest of the
information he is expected to learn. As a result, we appear to start
off slowly with the student's tutoring because we emphasize the
basic frame work first, then we start current classroom work. This
method provides the longest lasting learning benefit.
